Hints & Tips
General Storage Hints
To ensure your belongings stay in great condition while in storage, here are a few helpful tips:
-
Use proper packaging:Protect your items with cartons, bubble wrap, packing paper, and port-a-robes (for hanging clothing). We have all these packaging supplies available for purchase at Wanaka Storage Solutions.
-
Remove batteries:Always take the batteries out of battery-operated toys, remote controls, torches, and similar items to avoid leakage or damage.
-
Drain petrol and oil:Before storing lawnmowers, weed eaters, and similar equipment, be sure to drain any petrol or oil to prevent leaks and spills.
-
Wrap fragile items:For mirrors, prints, and paintings, use bubble wrap to ensure they stay safe during storage.
Furniture
-
Clean before storing:Make sure to clean cupboards, drawers, and chairs, especially removing any food items. Leftover food can attract pests and cause damage to your furniture.
Whiteware
-
Fridges and freezers:Clean and thoroughly dry any whiteware before storing. Leave the doors slightly ajar to allow airflow, and avoid leaving items on the shelves to prevent any damage or marking.
Glassware and Dishes
-
Protect fragile items:Wrap glassware and dishes with bubble wrap or packing paper for extra protection. When packing, fill any empty space in cartons with scrunched packing paper to prevent items from shifting.
-
Stack carefully:Always stack cartons with fragile items on top of others and clearly mark those cartons as “fragile” to avoid accidents.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment
-
Wrap with care:For plasmas, LCDs, stereos, surround sound systems, and computers, wrap them securely in bubble wrap. If possible, store plasmas and LCDs in their original boxes, storing them on their edge. If you don’t have the original packaging, use scrunched packing paper to fill any gaps and secure the items during transit.
